Thompson Packaging was formed in 1984, the family have been involved with packaging since the 1927. It’s safe to say packaging is in our blood.
William Thompson began trading as a tea merchant in Bethnal Green.
When his son Bill took over, he replaced the lead-lined tea chests with the newly emerging cardboard box. Turning existing ones inside out, disguising the artwork and reusing them.
Bill was an early advocate for recycling corrugated board for packaging.
Bill Thompson’s vision in packaging led him to set up a corrugated packaging box manufacturing plant in Basildon, later moving to Norfolk in 1971.
Bill went on to set up Norwich Corrugated Board in Fishergate. This has become one of the UK’s largest sheet board manufacturers.
In 1984 Thompson Packaging Brothers was formed. Operating from its Norwich premises, the company quickly grew and began supplying many household names.
As a result, they quickly outgrew two different premises before moving to Robberds Way, Norwich. Thompson Packaging began using improved and fast production methods and as a result quickly outgrew the premises.
Continued investment by Thompson Packaging included a new extension to the building, remaining competitively priced as an independent manufacturer of bespoke packaging solutions with exceptional customer service.
During 2018, the completion of a 1,000 square meter extension became the home of an automatic die cutting machine.
After a whirlwind couple of years, Thompson Packaging has continued to adapt and grow with customers looking to reduce their carbon footprint through bespoke packaging solutions. The most notable changes include acquiring new additional premises and welcoming an advanced case making machine.
Thompson Packaging business expansion has been supported by New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership through the Growing Business Fund
